What Would You Do, and Why?
My 10th anniversary is coming up, and my wife would like to get me a coin. :ARMS1: Beats a pair of pants anyday.
What would you do, buy a numismatic gold coin (around $700-750 price range) a numismatic silver coin from 1800's same price range, or would you buy the equivalent in silver PMs and why. The Great Ag |
Re: What Would You Do, and Why?
Normally, I don't say buy numismatic.
However, if the wife wants a coin for our anniversary - That's the time. Go gold. Can also get a chain and holder so she can wear it. They look really nice. If she is likely to wear it a good bit - a $10.00 gold piece may be better than $20. Depends on if she likes big jewelry, if she's a large or small woman, etc. |

Great ideas, ya'll. Would love to get away, but we have a little one, but definitely dinner and some form of activity. :musicus: Ha! Seriously, I am thinking I will go with a nice $20 gold coin pre 1933. I figure I won't sell that too soon, but a Drapped Bust silver dollar is nice too. Oh, the dilemmas I face today, sigh The Great Ag |

Re: What Would You Do, and Why?
In the precious metals theme....I went onto Ebay, and bought my husband the coolest thing: a sterling silver sailboat model (he's a sailor) in a mahogany glass case
The thing is just gorgeous, about 12" tall. These things come up sometimes, and what amazed me was the workmanship, and it's sheer weight. It was priced far less than spot. It was about 1/2 pound of silver, priced at whatever the auction would fetch. I've noticed that sterling silver tableware is also not priced anywhere close to spot. If you give a beautiful sterling piece, (especially the japanese sterling, which is 950) it has utility, beauty and value. Just one girl's opinion |

I'll check on the Japanese sterling.....I've seen British 950 but wasn't aware of the Asian manufacture. Thanks. |

Hey, quick question, how do you turn a link into a statement like you did? The Great Ag |
Re: What Would You Do, and Why?
Since it's especially a gift -- more than a purely hardnosed financial investment -- you might want to look at the Perth Mint website and check their Lunar Series 1-kilo silver coins. They've been issuing them since 1999 or 2000, each with the appropriate animal for the Chinese year in question.
Some of them are really beautiful -- and in the kilo size you can certainly make out all the detail! They're marked up a bit over melt value, of course, but are still close to bullion coin prices. Although they do make them in gold (1-kg -- gulp!) I always assure my friends that "A kilo of .999 silver is ALWAYS in good taste when shopping for a gift for me." CMI is one place to check for prices. |
Re: What Would You Do, and Why?
I'd go with a graded, common date $20 gold piece.
That way its nice and makes your wife feel good about giving it, it has a lot of history, but you don't waste a bunch of money on numispoop premium. Let's face it, if the economy does the nose dive most of us expect, that draped bust isn't going to get its head above water anytime soon. :frown: |

I'd get one of these bad boys. And maybe a dildo or something. http://www.apmex.com/shop/buy/04mapl....asp?orderid=0

Make sure the cursor is where you want to add a link. Then click the icon. It will ask for the link. Then the text in the middle of the link will be highlighted. Change that to whatever you want. It should look something like this: Visit google! Which will result in: Visit google! |

Runcible, thank you. Kunery, You may have changed my mind about the gold piece. We were married back in 1996, so now really cool gold coins, but maybe from the year my little girl was born, 2003. Everyone has given me a lot of good ideas. Keep them coming, and I will let you know you what I finally get. I will post a picture too. The Great Ag |
Re: What Would You Do, and Why?
Man does not live by bread (PM) alone......... once in a while is good to splurge a little and specially on special occasions...... buy her a gold necklace and she can get you a gold chain, keep it in the family :musicus:

Re: What Would You Do, and Why?
Among all the thematic coins, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a set of "Anniversary Coins". I have no Idea where to find such a thing if it even exists, but it would be a nice gift for the two of you.

Re: What Would You Do, and Why?
numismatic coins are probably not for the novice, because u couldnt tell what u are getting into. MAy be the art of buying numismatic coins is only for the elite and nobody gives those secrets away. Even the brahmins do not give their secrets away. Some of the music teachers in India and in the us keep all the melodious songs in their families. Its like pulling teeth to learn one song. so many strat to learn and give up. similarly may be teh art of buying numismatic coins will die a slow death.

Re: What Would You Do, and Why?
If the wife was going to buy me a coin I think I would go with a Indian Head Type 5 dollar gold piece. Like a 1908 S just 82,000 of them. 1911 D just 72,500 minted. I just love these coins of course I would rather it be slabbed and AU or BU. I would love the 1909 O just 34,200 minted but that one has to be slabbed as it the only O minted and has some real value.

Re: What Would You Do, and Why?
My wife's birthday is Tuesday and I haven't come up with a workable idea yet.
She's a cat lover so I thought about a Isle of Manx cat on a necklass but I couldn't find one at a price that I would pay. |
